The following test is an easy and fast way to check if you have the basic requirements to apply for Dual Italian Citizenship by descent (by right of blood). The result will help you determine whether you can successfully start the process of becoming an Italian citizen.

Please note that the following test and its questions are not exhaustive and are only aimed at helping the applicant understand if he/she has the basic requirements to start the process and apply for Italian Citizenship using the Ius sanguinis (blood line) criteria. The result of this test should never be considered completely satisfactory or replace the advice of an expert attorney.

ARE YOU ABLE TO IDENTIFY YOUR ANCESTOR AND HIS/HER INFORMATION?
  1. Do you know your Italian ancestor’s full name?
  2. Do you know his/her approximate date of birth?
  3. Do you know the Italian town where he/she was born?
  • If you answered “yes” to all the questions move to the next step.
  • If you answered “no” to one or more of these questions, you may start researching on your own using numerous on-line resources to acquire more information. If you are unable to gather additional information on your Italian ancestor please contact us to learn how we can assist you.
VERIFY THE MAIN DATES OF HIS/HER IMMIGRATION PROCESS
  1. Did your ancestor pass away in Italy before 17th March 1861?

If you answered “yes”, sorry you are not eligible to apply for Italian citizenship jure sangunis. Contact us to learn if you can use alternative blood lines that would allow you to apply, or if there are alternative paths for you to get Italian citizenship.

If you answered “no” please move to the next step.

  1. Did your ancestor become an American citizen before June 14th 1912?

If you answered “yes”, sorry you are not eligible to apply for Italian citizenship jure sangunis. Contact us to learn if you can use alternative blood lines that would allow you to apply, or if there are alternative paths for you to get Italian citizenship.

If you answered “no” please move to the next step.

  1. Are you applying through a female Italian ancestor or are there any female ascendants in the Italian bloodline?

If you answered “yes”, please contact us to make sure you are eligible to apply for Italian citizenship by descent.

If you answered “no” please move to the next step.

TRACE A DIRECT LINE TO YOUR ANCESTOR
  1. Can you trace a direct line from yourself to your Italian ancestor?
  2. Did you or any of your ancestors ever formally renounced your/their right to Italian citizenship before an Italian consulate or embassy?
  3. Have any of your family members already applied or obtained Italian Citizenship?

If you answered “yes”, you are likely able to qualify for Italian citizenship. Congratulations!
